Human behavior is so interesting to observe, isn’t it?
Think about yourselves in a bookended day. Filled with meetings after meetings, & phone calls, & commitments. Our reaction is trying to crawl out of this crevice. We’re squeezed for time & this climb is exhausting.
But some people will say “Mel, I am great at multitasking!”.
Well, I have some disappointing news for you… Multitasking is actually creating some havoc.
Multitasking & task-switching are actually making us dumb. It is actually decreasing our IQ by 15 points!
🚨Multi-tasking is like operating on a sleepless night.
🚨Multi-tasking is like getting an 8-year-old to write the most important email you need to send. Would you ever do that?
But still, a lot of people will say “You know what Mel? Multi-tasking is how I operate. I’m used to doing it. I can do it, but I can’t get rid of any of these things because they’re all obligations.”
And so I challenge back gently and say “You have the capacity. It’s just being eroded somewhere & we need to find that erosion.”
🔔One of the main culprits for these ‘Capacity Thieves’ is our addiction to notifications. Our addiction to notifications is killing us slowly.
🔔Research is actually telling us that we are addicted to notifications and the anticipation of an alert, the reward of new stimuli, & the subtle disappointment of news-lull. These reactions are creating an excess of stress hormones & elevated cortisol levels in our bodies. Hormones that our bodies cannot break down fast — therefore it’s depleting our cells & our tissues.
This is not the way we should be operating.
So, we need to take note of where we are being distracted. We need to acknowledge that our commitments deserve more than our attention-span “after a sleepless night”.
🏆Whether it’s a phone call with a loved one or an email for work — we need to make active choices to give focus to the things that are worth our attention.
